Manitouwadge High School is the first High School in Ontario that is offering Northern Studies. The Northern Studies Program is lead by Mr. Martin, the instuctor, and Mr. Kuczynski, the co-ordinator. In this course the students will learn how to survive in the wilderness and they will obtain many different skills and certificates. The course is taught in and out of the high school.

Some activities that the Northern Studies Program offers throughout the semester include:

- snowshoeing and hiking
- winter camping
- navigation
- risk and crisis management
- wilderness first aid
- expedition planning
- learning about the environment and ecology
- canoeing
- marten and trout studies
- tree planting
- a chainsaw course
